Snooker round-up: Strong showings on the season’s opening night

The Spalding and District Snooker League returned for another season on Thursday – with two Division One sides impressing on the opening night.

Holbeach A and Pyramid B both collected five points by seeing off Consti F and Donington A 5-1 respectively, making them the early pace-setters.

Holbeach benefitted from black-ball wins from Bryan Turnell (R14) and Robert Adams (O14), with Mick Pearl (O14) and Neal Jackson (O14) the other victors.

For Bourne side Pyramid, breaks of 30 from Jason Green (O63), 27 from Spencer Dawkins (O49) and 20 from both Alfinso Palumbo (O49) and Dave Pearson (O7) inspired the success.

Elsewhere in the top tier, Mark Woodberry (O56) sank a 38 break and a 22 clearance for Tulips B as he edged to a pivotal black ball victory over Don Monk (R7).

That helped the Spalding side beat Holbeach D 4-2.

Services E picked up a 4-2 win at Long Sutton A too, although Sean Swinburn (O42) did make a 26 break.

Also winning 4-2 were Donington C and Services C against Pyramid A and Boundary B respectively.

In Division Two, Boundary A made a strong start by brushing visitors Consti H aside 5-1.

Stewart Lilley (scr) was their star performer with a 24 break in the final frame.

Also impressing was Jim Howe (O42), who made a 22 break and a 22 clearance for Crowland B. But his side were beaten 4-2 at Services A in their opener.
22 was the best break in Pyramid C’s 4-2 triumph over Consti B, too.

Again it was in defeat, as Consti’s Mick Johnson (O28) racked up the individual highlight.

Daz King (O7) went one better for Boundary C as he sank a 23 break, but his side were seen off 4-2 at home by Gosberton A.

Down in Division Three, Consti E managed the week’s only whitewash as they defeated Services D 6-0.

John Mumford (R21), Bob Adams (R7), Mark Craig (R14), Kevin Sweeney (scr) and Lindsay Porter (R14) all secured frame wins.

Also starting well were Long Sutton C, who beat Consti C 5-1 despite a 28 break from Stuart Gravil (O14).

It was also 5-1 as Consti D defeated Holbeach E in a game that saw Richard Lowe (O28) and Martin Perkins (O28) make breaks of 28 and 23 in the same frame.
