Snooker round-up: Joy of six for Holbeach D in best victory of the night

Holbeach D stormed into the top six of the Spalding and District Snooker League Division One standings with a maximum victory on Thursday night.

On an evening that saw just seven fixtures played across the three divisions due to the treacherous conditions in South Lincolnshire, Holbeach’s 6-0 triumph at Consti F was the most eye-catching result.

Richard Lowe (O14), who made a 24 break, got the ball rolling with an opening frame victory over Bryan Turnell (R21), before a 22 break from Ben Harding (O7) allowed him to add the second frame.

Neil Grant (R7), Ian Woodberry (O7) and Paul Daw (O21) rounded off the rout, beating Warren Peel (scr), Darren Stanley (R7) and Martyn Stanley (R21) respectively.

Also in the top tier, Long Sutton A eased their relegation fears with a welcome 5-1 win at Tulips A – who they leapfrog in the table.

Breaks of 28 and 24 from Stuart Atkin (O42) and Matt Smith (O35) in frame wins were key for Sutton, while Steve Dent (R7) and Sean Swinburn (O42) also secured important successes.

Mike Sampson (O7) was the sole frame victor for Tulips, who fall into the bottom five.

There was better news for Tulips B, who defeated hosts Holbeach C 4-2 to climb up to fourth place.

Two of their frame wins came from Martin Deacon (O14), who beat both Nick Edwards (scr) and Daniel Ashton (O7).

A 22 break from Darren Woodberry (O35) then helped the Spalding side secure the lion’s share of the spoils in Deeping.

Down in Division Two, only a pair of matches beat the weather.

Services A enjoyed the most handsome victory, beating relegation rivals Long Sutton C 5-1.

In a showdown that featured no notable breaks, Services’ wins came from Mike Knight (O21), Charlie Mullane (R21), Paul Quincey (R7) and Jon Bettinson (scr).

Susan Lefley (R21) did hit back with a commanding frame win over Pete Mullane (O28) for Sutton, who drop into the bottom two.

That’s because fellow strugglers Holbeach B enjoyed a 4-2 victory over Consti G.

Zac Rowlett’s (O14) 22 break helped him win the first frame, before team-mates Baz Haynes (scr) and Martin Davis (O49) completed the victory.

Andy Grimwood (O21) and and Martin Drury (R7) did win to push the match to the final frame, but it wasn’t enough for Consti.

Down in Division Three, a 22 clearance from Jason Rose (O21) helped Services B to a 5-1 home win over fellow high-fliers Consti E.

In a game that saw three of the five frames go to the final black, Services had Rose, Paul Doades (R7), Tim Nash (O35) and Alan Hansard (scr) to thank for their healthy success.

Lindsay Porter (R14) did win the final frame for Consti to stave off a whitewash for his side, however.

Elsewhere, Services D beat hosts Consti A 4-2 in the final match to beat the weather.

Perhaps the tightest game of the week, two of the five frames went to final black – while one ended on a re-spotted black. That was the second frame, which saw Chris Dunmore (O7) edge out

Paul Kent (R21) in the tighest frame possible.

Karen Howlett (R21) and Tanya Peel (scr) then won frames – the latter on the last black of the match – to edge Services home.
