Snooker leaders Donington C stunned as unbeaten run ends against Holbeach A

The last remaining unbeaten record was finally smashed in Spalding and District Snooker League last Thursday night.

Division One pace-setters Donington C saw their ten-game winning streak ended by Holbeach A, who came back from 2-0 down to claim a narrow 4-2 triumph and blow the title race wide open.

Relentless Donington did look like making it 11 games unbeaten when Ben Wrigglesworth (O14) and Neil Reynolds (O49) – who made breaks of 29 and 20 – took the opening two frames.

But Mick Ayres Jnr (R14) hit back, allowing Bobby White (O21) and Mick Ayres (scr) to win the final two frames and clinch the match.

That win leaves Holbeach fourth, level on points with Services A – who saw off Boundary A 4-2 in another tight tussle.

This one also went the distance, with John Bettinson (scr) beating Stewart Lilley (O7) in the final frame.

There was another 4-2 scoreline in the all-Spalding affair between Tulips B and Services E, too.

Services emerged victorious thanks to Jason Rose’s (O14) black ball win over Darren Woodberry (O42) at the death – rendering Mark Woodberry’s (O49) fine 40 break earlier on as mere consolation.

At the bottom end of the table, basement boys Boundary B gave their season a shot in the arm by defeating Holbeach D 5-1.

Martyn McGhee (R14), Matt Wilson (R21), Doughy Lithgoe (scr) and Brian Addy (scr) all won for the Deepings side, who are now just one point adrift at the foot.

Elsewhere in the top flight, Tony Scully (O21) made a 27 break to help Donington A topple Whittlesey A 5-1.

In Division Two, leaders Long Sutton A are now eight points ahead at the top following a 5-1 success over Holbeach B.

Wayne Dent (O35), Derek Beba (O7), Sean Swinburn (O28) and Mat Smith (O42) all won for Sutton.

Consti B lost ground in second place after they were handed a 4-2 home reverse by Long Sutton B.

A fine 39 break from Phil Goodman (O28) helped him win the decisive final frame for Sutton, while Mick Johnson’s (O28) 27 break and 25 clearance was in vain for high-flying Consti.

Services F are now just one point off second spot having whitewashed hosts Gosberton A 6-0.

Black-ball victories from Jack Chilvers (O28) and Oliver Turner (O28) proved key for them.

At the other end of the table, Pyramid C are five points from safety after going down 4-2 at Consti G.

Andy Grimwood’s (O7) 21 break was vital in that one.

Gosberton D are also struggling – and they went down 4-2 at Whittlesey C.

Steve Jennings (O28) lit up that clash with a stellar 22 clearance.

In Division Three, table-topping Consti A saw off hosts Bourne SC A 5-1 to stay four points clear of the pack.

Duane Atkinson (O21) sank a 24 break in vain for the Bourne side.

Crowland A are hot on their heels in second, having also picked up a 5-1 win.

They knocked off Services D, who have only won once all season.

Chasing both of those two down are Long Sutton C, who are six points off top spot with a game in hand.

They defeated Consti E 5-1, with the highlight being a 27 break from Stuart Atkin (O35) in a black-ball win over Bob Adams (O7).
