SNOOKER: Good night for Spalding league’s struggling sides

There were rare wins for the bottom two sides in the second division of Spalding and District Snooker League last week.

The plaudits go to Gosberton B, who pulled off a fantastic 5-1 result against leaders Crowland C.
There were comfortable wins for Martin Ulyatt, Simon Lambert and Sam Craft, while Shane White edged home 68-56 against Richard Wesley thanks in part to a 22 break.
On a good night for the home side, even Adam Twigg’s defeat to Russell Moore was a narrow 52-42.

However, bottom side Crowland B ensured the gap to Gosberton B remained three points with a 5-1 defeat of fellow strugglers Services D.
Arthur Coleman’s black-ball defeat of Tanya Peel wrapped up a comprehensive win after Wigs Harrison had grabbed the Spalding side’s only point in the opening game.

Holbeach C missed the chance to go top, only returning from Pyramid C with two points. Dan Ashton and Mark Gregory earned the wins for the visitors.

Meanwhile, Consti G eased away from the lower reaches of the table by seeing off the club’s H side 5-1. Andy Grimwood was the only player to miss out on a win, going down 55-41 to Doug Garfoot.

In Division One, title hopefuls Holbeach A won 42 at Services E.
Phil Spencer got the Spalding side off to a cracking start with a 65-17 defeat of fellow O14 handicapper Mick Ayres Snr, but the next three games went Holbeach’s way – Jem Merrison, Mick Ayres Jnr and Bobby White securing the overall win.

Bottom side Consti B boosted their hopes of avoiding the relegation trapdoor. A 5-1 home win over Tulips B was just the tonic.
Consti B went 2-0 up thanks to John Christian and Steve Spencer, before Darren Woodberry’s big 72-15 win against Mick Johnson (both O35 handicap) rallied Tulips B.
Woodberry followed up a 20 break with a 45.
However, Martin Fear secured the match result for Consti B in the next game and John Keeton made it a very satisfactory five-point haul.

The league’s only 6-0 result of the night came in Division Three. It went to Long Sutton C, although the most of the games were tighter than the scoreline suggests.
Consti E can consider themselves unlucky after losing three times on the back ball.
The result enabled Sutton C to gain ground on all of the top three sides as the season approaches the halfway stage.

At the other end of the table, Whittlesey B made it a hat-trick of wins for the league’s three bottom sides.
It was a fruitless long trip for Gosberton C, who had only Alf Ault’s 75-33 win over Kerry Skutela as consolation in a 5-1 defeat.
Andrew Skutela and Michael Foster both sunk the black ball to see off Paul Whye and Paul Craft respectively.
Whittlesey B moved off the foot of the table as a result, replaced by Donington D.

A tussle between two other strugglers – Donington B and Pyramid E – went the way of the Bourne side.
Donington B dragged themselves back from 2-0 down, with wins for Phil Burrell (on the black ball) and Darren Templeman. But Pyramid’s Neil McLean scuppered hopes of a comeback win for the home side, beating fellow O7 handicapper Mick Clark 56-44 in the decider.
It was Pyramid’s third win of the season and Donington B’s ninth defeat in 12.

Services F continue to go well at the top, seeing off the club’s B side 5-1.
