Smith’s sensational break keeps Sutton A unbeaten

A dazzling break of 75 from Mathew Smith (O42) steered Long Sutton A to a super 6-0 victory over Holbeach C in the Spalding and District Snooker League.
Smith’s stunning effort was the highlight of a one-sided contest, with Steve Dent (R7), Sean Swinburn (O28), Stuart Atkin (O35) and Wayne Dent (O35) all on winning form to send Sutton top of the Division Two table.
The O42 handicapper is now the early pace-setter in the race for the season’s best break, both overall and in the second tier.
Elsewhere in Division Two, Steve Godfrey (O35) and Phil Goodman (O28) made breaks of 29 and 22 respectively as Long Sutton B saw off Holbeach  B 5-1.
Ben Harding (O7) also made a 22 clearance for Holbeach B, but it was in vain.
Marcus Hamilton (O42) was another to make a solid break as his 27 helped Pyramid D defeat Crowland C 4-2.
Also on winning form were Consti G who picked up a 5-1 success at Services F. Jack Chilvers (O28) did, at least, notch a 20 break in reply for them.
There was something of a derby between Boundary C and Pyramid C, with the Bourne boys emerging 4-2 victors. Star man Paul Spittlehouse (O56) bagged a 22 break for the Deeping side, but was crucially beaten on the final black.
Up in Division One, Donington C lead the way with two wins from two after edging out Whittlesey A 4-2.
Ben Wrigglesworth (O14), who made a 22 clearance, sealed the win in the penultimate frame.
Fellow young gun Matt Turner (O7) also added a 25 clearance earlier in the match.
The best break in the top tier came from Vince Fitter, as his Services E side dispatched Tulips A 5-1.
Fitter (O21) sank a 37 as he beat Simon Law 69-29, while Bren Bowman (O49) continued his fine start to the season with a 26 break in what was Tulips’ only frame success.
Club rivals Tulips B fared better after cruising to a 5-1 triumph over Services A.
Mark Woodberry (O49) starred for Tulips, making a 32 break in the all-Spalding affair.
It was closer between Boundary B and Holbeach A, with the latter edging to a 4-2 success.
Two of the five frames went to the final black before Bobby White (O21) settled it in the final clash.
A 29 break from Jem Merrison (O35) was the best anyone could muster, with Richard Wilson (O21) scoring 21 and Mick Pearl (O14) notching a  cool 20.
Meanwhile, Adam Twigg (O7) made a 24 break for Gosberton B at Donington A – but saw his side lose 4-2.
Down in Division Three, Long Sutton C continued their flawless start to the new season with a 5-1 home triumph over Consti D.
The in-form Dan Mayfield (O21) top scored with a fine 30 break for Sutton, with Mark Dennis (O7), David Lefley (scr) and Susan Lefley (R14) also managing frame wins.
Gosberton C’s showdown with Donington D was perhaps the tightest tussle at this standard, with three games going to the final black.
All three of them went the way of Gosberton, with Alf Ault (R21), David Haresign (R14) and Norman Gookey (R7) getting the wins that earned Gosberton a 4-2 victory.
Also 4-2 winners were Pyramid E, who had too much for hosts Consti E.
Steve Sharpe’s (R7) victory over Bob Adams (O7) proved key for the Bourne side.
The 4-2 theme continued in two other matches, with Whittlesey B beating hosts Donington B and Services B seeing off Crowland A.
