Sheffield FC fend off Spalding United comeback

A sterling Spalding United comeback fell just short on Saturday as they were beaten 4-3 at Sheffield FC in Evo-Stik League First Division South.

Ashley Longstaff’s double (11 & 46) and a Reece White (48) put hosts Sheffield in a seemingly dominant position at The BT Local Stadium, but Andrew Tidswell (54) hit back for Pat Rayment’s side.

The Tulips fell further behind when Tim Whittaker (70) made it 4-1, only for midfielder Lewis Webb (74 & 85) to set up a grandstand finish.

There was no leveller for Spalding though – and they slip to 11th as a result.

Rayment’s charges must now pick themselves up for Tuesday night’s Sir Halley Stewart Playing Field clash with Gresley (7.45pm).

Meanwhile, Moulton Harrow enjoyed a day to remember in ChromaSport Peterborough League Premier Division.

They thrashed Peterborough Sports Reserves 5-2 at Broad Lane to go sixth.

Just ahead of them in fifth are Pinchbeck United, who drew 4-4 at Thorney in the game of the day.

At the wrong end of the table, Holbeach United Reserves were handed a 5-0 defeat at leaders Coates Athletic.
