Shed builds up skills for young people

A group of 11-year-olds have been the first to take part in a new brick-laying course laid on by the Long Sutton Men’s Shed.

The Youth Shed is seeing six children being taught how to lay bricks over ten weeks by professionals Coun Jack Tyrrell and Rick Lorenz.

The course is being sponsored by Buildbase which has supplied the tools while D Brown Building Contractor is inviting the students to one of its building sites.

A spokesman for the shed said: “The idea of a Youth Shed was put forward by Jack Tyrrell over two years ago as a way to teach young school children various construction skills in the hope to set them on the path of a worthwhile job in the construction sector.

“As an incentive the school children will be given a bricklaying tool if they have progressed satisfactorily during each lesson.

“At the end of the ten-week course provided they have achieved a reasonable level of proficiency they will have obtained a complete set of bricklaying tools.”

The Youth Shed are looking for young people who may like to take part in the course.

Forms are available from the Men’s Shed’s base at Silverwood Garden Centre.
