September open date planned for Spalding alternative academy

The controversial Springwell Alternative Academy for youngsters excluded from other schools could open this September.

After a residents’ uproar, a public consultation process was extended and the results are now in.

A spokesman said the plans “got mix reviews” but the report isn’t yet complete. Once the data is collated, it will be presented to the Department For Education.

However, the spokesman said last week “the planned open date is September this year”.

Work has begun at the Matmore Gate, with fittings and furniture from the site’s previous occupants, the Spalding Post 16 Centre, being removed and placed in skips.

Residents’ reasons for objections range from traffic problems to matters of health and safety.

The consultation was due to end on December 15, 2017, but after a meeting in Spalding, the consultation was extended to December 31.

Planning permission for a multi-use games area was granted by South Holland District Council.
