Spalding Hockey Club hosted the first of five primary school hockey tournaments scheduled for this school year at Glen Park, Surfleet on Friday.
Seventeen teams from 11 primary schools took part.
For many, this was their first outing and they were delighted to represent their school in a competitive sporting occasion.
The teams were divided into four beginner leagues with the aim of progressing to graded leagues over the season.
In League A, Boston-based Tower Road showed they had not lost the appetite for goals, winning all three of their matches, beating St Norbert’s (8-0), chief rivals Monks House (2-0) and Spalding Parish (7-0).
Current title holders Monks House finished in runner up spot with wins over Spalding Parish (5-0) and St Norbert’s (4-0).
In League B, a well organised St John’s team played well throughout and ended up on top of the tree with three victories.
They recorded wins over Tower Road (1-0), Ayscoughfee (3-0) and Monks House (2-0).
Monks House battled well throughout and claimed the runner up spot on goal difference from Tower Road.
It was Surfleet Primary who shone in League C.
They started brightly with a win (4-1) over St Thomas’s and then impressed further beating Tower Road (7-0) before the final encounter against Gosberton Academy.
With both teams being cheered on by a vociferous crowd, it brought a great end to the afternoon and a most entertaining 0-0 draw.
Boston’s St Thomas’s recovered from their early set back to finish runners up.
The five team league D consisted mainly of newcomers to these tournaments and it was John Harrox who took the lead with victories over St Norbert’s (5-0), Pinchbeck East (1-0) and St Thomas’s (2-0) but they were denied a clean sweep by a determined Gosberton Academy team that held them to a goal-less draw.
Pinchbeck East claimed second spot with wins over St Thomas’s (1-0) and St Norbert’s (3-0) and a draw (1-1) with Gosberton Academy.
