Dan Cotton’s last-minute strike earned Spalding United a 2-1 win over AFC Rushden and Diamonds on Saturday, while Holbeach United beat Desborough Town by the same score at Carter’s Park.
In the big game of the day, UCL Premier Division champions Spalding gained revenge over the only side to beat them on the league this season as they came from behind at the Dog and Duck.
It looked like a Diamonds double could be on the cards when Tom Lorraine notched just 17 minutes into his debut. But Mark Jones hit back immediately for the Tulips when he turned in a low cross less than 60 seconds later.
Michael Duggan pulled off a stunning point-blank save to deny Matt Gearing in the closing stages, before Cotton clinched a 31st league win from 33 games for Pat Rayment’s men with a drilled low finish three minutes into added time.
Meanwhile, Holbeach also came from behind to edged a tight match with Ar Tarn at Carter’s Park. Arn Tarn went ahead with a goal direct from a corner, but Tommy Treacher levelled just before half time before the Tigers pinched a late winner.
