Saturday football: Spalding United lose crunch clash and Holbeach United humbled

Saturday was a tough day for South Holland’s top two as Spalding United were edged out 1-0 by Shaw Lane AFC in their top-of-the-table clash and Holbeach United crashed out of the ChromaSport UCL KO Cup against lower graded Olney Town.

Starting with Spalding, a first-half strike from Gary Burnett gave Shaw Lane all three points at the Sir Halley – and moved them six points clear at the top of Evo-Stik NPL First Division South with three games in hand on the Tulips.

In a game that saw Dave Frecklington’s side create the better chances, a defeat was tough to take for the Tulips chief.

Meanwhile, Holbeach’s slump in form continued as they were humbled 4-2  by Division One high-fliers Olney Town at Carter’s Park.

Aaron Eyett was among the scorers for the Tigers, but they missed the chance to advance to the semi-finals – having suffered a fourth loss on the trot.

They must now re-focus ahead of Wednesday’s Lincs FA Senior Trophy quarter final at Boston Town.

Meanwhile, Pinchbeck United moved level on points with PDFL Premier Division leaders Netherton United after picking up a 2-0 win over Holbeach United Reserves at Knight Street.

Tom Panton and top scorer Ollie Maltby, his 32nd of the season, got the goals for Ian Dunn’s side.

Moulton Harrox’s cup clash at Wisbech Town Reserves was called off, while Crowland Town lost 9-2 at Stanground Sports.
