Saturday football: FA Cup woe for Spalding United, Deeping comeback stuns Holbeach United

Spalding United exited the Emirates FA Cup with a 1-0 defeat at lower-graded Brantham Athletic on Saturday, while Holbeach United lost a 2-0 lead as they went down 3-2 at home to Deeping Rangers in the Future Lions UCL Premier Division.

Starting with the Tulips, a late goal from George Clarke sentenced them to a surprising defeat in Suffolk as hosts Brantham went past the first qualifying round for the first time in their history.

Chris Rawlinson’s side will hope to bounce back at Loughborough Dynamo on Tuesday night (7.45pm).

Meanwhile, Holbeach suffered a 3-2 defeat against Deeping for the second time this season.

The Tigers looked set for a derby victory after goals from Billy Smith and Josh Ford gave them a 2-0 half-time lead.

But goals from Danny Durkin and Sam Mooney levelled matters at Carter’s Park, before Rangers had Charlie Coulson sent off.

That failed to derail their comeback, however, with a Jonny Clay own goal sealing Holbeach’s fate.

The defeat leaves Seb Hayes’ Tigers seven points behind early pace-setters Pinchbeck United in ninth place.

In the ChromaSport PDFL, a Joe Townsend goal gave Moulton Harrox a 1-0 win at Thorney to make it nine wins from as many games for Kev Nottingham’s side.

Also on-song were Holbeach United Reserves, who defeated hosts Long Sutton Athletic 3-1. Jonny Allen (2) and Cal Davies grabbed the goals for the Tigers, who are fifth in the table.

Staying in the top tier, Sutton Bridge United went down 3-0 at ICA Sports.
