Saturday football: FA Cup exits for Spalding United and Holbeach United

South Holland’s interest in the Emirates FA Cup is over for another season after both Spalding United and Holbeach United were knocked out of the competition on Saturday.

The Tulips suffered a somewhat controversial 4-2 home defeat against Dereham Town in the preliminary round, while the Tigers were soundly beaten 4-0 at higher-graded Corby Town.

Starting with Spalding, they led 1-0 at half-time thanks to Kegan Everington’s strike direct from a corner (42).

Goals from Shaun Wones (57) and Ryan Crisp (64) put Dereham ahead for the first time, only for Jamie Jackson (69) to level matters soon after.

The game then turned on a disputed penalty decision that saw Adam Hipperson put the Magpies back ahead (83), before Taron Hare was sent off moments later for pulling back Crisp – despite the striker having no chance of reaching the ball.

Spalding threw everything at their visitors in the final stages, but were punished for sending Duggan up for an injury-time corner when Crisp slotted into any empty net from distance in the final stages of the game.

It was more one-sided at Steel Park, with depleted Holbeach handed a hefty defeat.

Stephen Diggin (26 & 35) gave the higher graded Steelmen a nice early cushion, before Elliot Sandy made it three on 48 minutes.

Ex-Tiger Jake Duffy rounded off the rout in the final minute on a day when manager Danny Hussey was forced to come out of retirement to feature as a late substitute.

In the ChromaSport PDFL, two South Holland sides were dumped out of the PFA Senior Cup.

Moulton Harrox lost 4-3 on penalties at Peterborough Polonia after a 2-2 draw, while Holbeach United Reserves suffered a 3-0 home reverse against Thorney.
