RUGBY: Spalding RFC appoint Williams as new head coach in ‘fresh approach’

Ben Williams has been appointed the new head coach at struggling Spalding RFC as they try to snap a run of 17 straight league defeats at home to Kettering on Saturday (2.15pm).

Town have gone for a “new direction and fresh approach” by replacing Andy McMahon, who they say has done an admirable job under tough circumstances in Midlands One East this season.

A club statement said: “After lengthy deliberation the committee have decided that a new direction and fresh approach is needed.
“The committee wish to record their thanks and huge respect for Andy McMahon for his commitment and dedication to the role during a very tough season for the club. Lesser individuals would have wilted under the pressure.

“With immediate effect the players will be under the direction of Ben Williams. Ben has been a player for many years at Spalding and has played rugby at higher level with Bedford.
“He has considerable knowledge of the game and many new ideas too.

“We look forward to the players embracing this new leadership and striving towards a more successful remainder of the season.”

Town’s form could hardly be worse – they have scored just 14 points in three defeats this month, conceding 209. Kettering are third in the table.
