Royal recognition for music director Mel

The musical director of Holbeach Town Band rubbed shoulders with Prince Charles and Princess Anne at Buckingham Palace at a garden party at which his “outstanding service to the local community” was recognised.

Mel Hopkin has been musical director of the band for more than 20 years and was joined by his wife, Trish, at the Royal Garden Party.

Mel said he had no idea the band had organised this for him and that it was “a complete but very pleasant surprise”.

Prince Charles, Camilla Duchess of Cornwall and Princess Anne were at the event along with 8,000 invited guests.

The Royal party walked through the grounds talking to guests as they made their way to the Royal tea tent. Two military bands played alternately throughout the afternoon.

Mel will run the band’s Learn to Play Week from July 29.
