Rose’s fine ton in vain

Despite a fine century from skipper Matthew Rose, Moulton Harrox were beaten by Boston as their South Lincs and Border League title charge hit a bump in the road.

The first of two games in hand on leaders Newborough ended in a five wicket defeat on Saturday.

Rose came in when his side were 20/2 and they slipped to 77/4 after Paul Edgeller (22) was caught out.

The skipper hit 17 fours and a six in his 100, enjoying a stand of 81 with Ruari Drumm (25) and 49 with Anish Suwarnarej (13).

Moments after getting his century Rose was the seventh and last wicket to fall as Moulton added five more runs to finish their 45 overs on 217.

A stunning 103 from just 59 balls by Boston opener Scott Ellery turned the game Boston’s way though.

He hit 16 fours and three sixes putting on 64 for the opening wicket of which his fellow opening bat scored just 10.

Ellery was finally bowled by pick of the bowlers Flynn Macmillan (1/19) in the 20th over with the score on 135 having scored over 75 per cent of his team’s runs to that point.

Being well ahead of the required rate, Damian Lawson (26) and Luke Gilding (32 not out) batted sensibly before Elliot Ashton (17) took his side to the verge of a victory finally secured with more than seven over in hand.

In the corresponding fixture in Division One, Harrox’s 2nd XI had an impressive win over Boston 2nd XI to boost their hopes of avoiding a bottom two finish.

The top order of Charlie Poulter (45), Zak Maddison (retired hurt on 25), Lewis Peak (15), Thilina Dilshan (16) and Cameron Fox (29 not out) all chipped in to help Moulton post 174/5.

All the bowlers then took them to victory as Boston were bowled out for 124 in the 32nd over.

Maddison returned to the field to take 3/33, Fox 3/38, Carl Lamming 2/24 and Jay Hemmant 1/12 sealed a 50 run victory.
