Roberts reveals his delight at keeping skipper Stevens at Holbeach United

Boss Tom Roberts reckons that Holbeach United have signalled their intent by securing the services of skipper Jamie Stevens for next season.

The centre-back, rated as the best defender in the UCL Premier Division by player/boss Roberts, has already agreed a deal to stay at Carter’s Park for next season.

Although the season has only just finished, Roberts felt that he had to act quickly to get a commitment from his skipper – and is now hoping that others will follow his example.

“It’s all about showing intent,” said the player/boss. “Everybody knows that ‘Jamma’ is the best defender in the league – and perhaps the level above too.

“Getting him to commit was one of my top aims and I’m delighted that he wants to stay.

“I’ve also spoken to the other lads and I’m confident that most of them will stay – including keeper Ricky Drury, which was another big one for me.”

Roberts isn’t hanging around with his pre-season plans, either. The player/boss is eyeing up summer fixtures against Bourne Town, Stamford, Oakham United, Boston United, Pinchbeck United, Whittlesey Athletic and Lincoln United.

He’s also expecting South Holland rivals Spalding United to come to Carter’s Park for a friendly, with a provisional date of August 2 agreed.

The Tigers chief is impressed with Spalding’s move to appoint Dave Frecklington as boss (see story, right) and hopes to keep up the positive relationship between the two South Holland clubs.

Roberts added: “I think that is a very good appointment for Spalding.

“I’ve spoken to a few of the lads who played under him at Lincoln United – and they all mentioned how good the team spirit was there.

“If he can replicate that at Spalding, they’ll be in for a good period under Dave. It’s good news for the area.

“We’ve built up a good relationship with Spalding over the past year and I hope it continues.”
