Spalding’s Water Taxi has enjoyed a great season this year, despite a blip which saw it unable to run at the weekend.
Low water levels meant the popular not-for-profit service had to cancel its usual timetable from last Friday (September 12) to Tuesday (September 16).
Operator Anthony Grunwell (pictured) said there had been problems with the sluice at Springfields as water levels had dropped.
“When we did our daily check, the water was too low and it wasn’t safe,” he said. “We hold health and safety as the top of our agenda, the safety of our clients is paramount.”
Water levels have now returned to normal after the Environment Agency repaired a fault. Mr Grunwell said he wasn’t sure why it dropped.
The service was beached for the whole of last summer when the water levels were being kept low due to repairs to a breached bank.
This year’s season was launched in April by Deputy Lieutenant of Lincolnshire Annabelle Ward and South Holland and the Deepings MP Sir John Hayes,
The season comes to an official end on Sunday, September 28 for the water taxi. The boat hiring side of the operation will continue while the weather remains good.
Plans are already under way for next year’s season, but Mr Grunwell said it was very much a case of ‘watch this space!”
“We had a three hour meeting and are planning for the next season. It is always about what we can do to make it even better for our clients,” he said.
The taxi, which has been running since 2007, operates between Spalding town centre and the Springfields outlet. For more information see the website www.spaldingwatertaxi.co.uk
