Relentless Moulton Harrox stay perfect to end year five points clear

Unstoppable Moulton Harrox completed a perfect first half of the ChromaSport Peterborough League season with a 2-0 victory at nearest rivals Whittlesey Athletic.

Goals from Ollie Maltby and Ben Allen on the last Saturday before Christmas secured Harrox their 14th win from as many league matches – despite seeing Ian Bradbury sent off in the second half.

The victory ensured Moulton  end 2015 five points clear at the top, with boss Dave Panton full of praise for his impressive side.

“We were fantastic,” said Panton. “I thought every player performed to a very high standard.

“The work-rate was excellent and they worked together as a team.

“I thought Jonny Clay and skipper Billy King were outstanding in the middle of midfield and Ben Allen played his best game for the club so far this season, being a constant threat in attack with his strength.

“We wanted to treat this game like any other this season and play to our strengths, doing exactly what we have been doing since August which the lads did exceptionally well again.

“They deserve huge credit for their performances, great discipline and character.”

Billed as Moulton’s toughest test yet, second-placed Whittlesey put them under pressure early on. But with Bobby Patterson and Ash Coddington dealing with their threat expertly, the visitors hit back to grab the first goal.

A great free kick from skipper King allowed Maltby to open the scoring with a strong header before the break.

Harrox had much more control of the game in the second period, but their task became harder when Bradbury collected two yellow cards – although the first of them was harsh considering he was seemingly hacked down in the box beforehand.

Still, Panton’s side kept their collective cool and wrapped up the win. Joe Townsend, Maltby and Allen combined well before the latter doubled the lead and clinched a very important win.

Harrox: Kenealy, Groves, Johnson, Coddington, King, Townsend, Maltby (Wheeler), Allen, Bradbury, Clay, Patterson. Not used: Lamb.

Sat (Jan 2): Netherton v Harrox (2pm).
