Recognition for town life savers

Two Holbeach firefighters have been recognised for saving the life of a 55-year-old man.

Crew manager Simon Smith and Errol Dunham had to give CPR to the man when they were the first emergency service on the scene of an incident on January 20, 2019.

The man was suffering chest pains but went into a cardiac arrest shortly after the pair arrived.

“It was quite an unusual job,” said Simon. “We normally get called out to incidents like chest pains but to have someone drop down right there in front of you, that’s not the norm.

“To be there at that specific time and decide what to do in such a short space of time doesn’t happen very often.

“While he might not have made it if not for what myself and Errol did, we’re part of a big wheel.

“The support we’ve had from colleagues has been brilliant.”

Errol has since moved on and is now part of the East Midlands Ambulance Service.

Watch manager John Kinder said: “It is a great feeling when we get a positive result fed back to us and for Simon and Errol to be recognised is good for us all as a station and shows we can make a positive difference in our strive to help our community.

“I am proud of all of my crew at Holbeach for the work, time and commitment that they put in to making Holbeach and surrounding villages a safe place to live and work. I am sure you will agree that not only Simon and Errol deserve a pat on the back but everyone at Station 15 Holbeach does.

“Well done everyone.”
