Rawlinson admits that Spalding United are lacking a little bit of sparkle after stalemate

Chris Rawlinson admitted that Spalding United lacked the cutting edge to break down Market Drayton Town on Saturday.

The Tulips were held to a 0-0 draw against their fellow Evo-Stik NPL First Division South strugglers at the Sir Halley Stewart Playing Field.

Although they bossed possession and had the better of the chances, Rawlinson felt the game perfectly highlighted their strengths and weaknesses so far this season.

“We started like a train,” said the Tulips chief. “I think we had three good chances in the first ten minutes, but lacked that bit of sparkle to get the ball in the net really.

“We looked very good shape-wise and I never really thought that they’d open us up and score if I’m honest.

“It’s frustrating that we didn’t build on the start we had, but scoring goals has been our Achilles heel all season.

“To be fair, their keeper did have a great game too.

“We applied plenty of pressure, but just couldn’t score. It’s the story of our season – we’ve been very solid at the back, but don’t have the budget to attract somebody here that can score the goals.”

Spalding handed a debut to new signing Danny Brooks as a half-time substitute. The cultured left-footer, who has just enjoyed an impressive loan spell with Holbeach United, joins from league rivals Lincoln United – for whom he played 250 games and scored 49 goals.

Tulips: Duggan, Walker (Davison), Hugo, Humble, Fixter, Spafford, Beeson (Brooks), Varley, Acar, Lockie (White), Siddons.

MOTM: Varley.

Attendance: 110.
