A ‘very unpopular’ car-shaped cycle rack has been removed from a Spalding street just four years after being installed.
It was put in the Sheep Market as part of £100,000 of government money given to Lincolnshire County Council in 2020 to promote cycling.
A similar one in Holbeach was taken out within weeks after residents complained.
Spalding’s has remained longer, but has now been removed.
Coun Elizabeth Sneath told the Spalding Town Forum: “The very unpopular car shaped cycle rack has been removed. It was damaged. It’s now replaced with some subtle hoops in the ground.
“These are far more discrete than the car shaped thing. Hopefully they will be well used.”
David Jones a member of the Pedals group that promotes cycling in the town said the replacement was ‘not very stable’.
Richard Fenwick, head of Highways asset for LCC said: “The car-shaped racks were put in place in different locations as part of a county-wide effort to get people more active by walking and cycling in Lincolnshire. They formed part of the conversation about how many cycles could be used and parked, compared to cars.
“This particular rack was damaged, so we took the decision to replace it with the more familiar Sheffield Cycle Stand design – these are the hoops that users may already be used to.
“The cost of this work to replace the broken structure with a new one that cyclists can use again is £1229.84. We hope that cyclists in the area appreciate having a not-damaged cycle rack at this location again, so that they can leave their bikes parked up safely.”
