Punchbowl Panthers are closing on second place in the Spalding Sunday Football League after results went their way over the weekend.

A double from Jonathan Turner and a John Smith strike fired the Panthers to a 3-1 victory at Sutton St James, who hit back through Tim Tomizzi.

That victory – their 13th from 19 games – moves Punchbowl level in second with Sutton Bridge Sunday, who ended their season with a 3-0 defeat at red-hot Fenway.

Tom Cherry, Josh Faulkner and Benjamin Holland all bagged for the hosts, who are now up to fourth after a seventh win on the spin.

Cherry’s strike was a beautifully curled effort, while man-of-the-match Holland slotted home after beating two men on the edge of the box.
Holland completed the scoring with a tidy finish.

That leaves Punchbowl requiring a point from their final game – which is away at champions Pinchbeck United Sunday – to take second.

It won’t be easy for the Panthers, though. Tom Roberts’ all-star Pinchbeck outfit were again in fine form at the weekend as they saw off Jubilee 7-2 at Knight Street.

Josh Ford and Ricky Drury both weighed in with hat-tricks for United, while Aidan Moore completed the scoring – taking their goal difference to a whopping 97 with two games left.
