Proposed home with ‘ski slope’ roof might ‘bring that area of Spalding upmarket a touch’

A proposed house with a “ski slope” roof has been given planning permission.

The design of the home to replace a dilapidated garage at 2 Osier Road, Spalding, didn’t sit well with all members of South Holland District Council’s planning committee.

Chairman Coun Roger Gambba-Jones wondered whether members were happy with the roof, which he likened to a “ski slope”.
The location near Laws Yard led Coun Bryan Alcock to say: “I find it totally incongruous in that siting.”

Vice-chairman Coun James Avery thought it said something that there were no objections from the public, adding: “I tend to feel I don’t like it but if it came to appeal could we resist?”

Spalding Wygate member Coun Christine Lawton said that incongruity is not always a bad thing and sometimes “innovative” design should be welcomed.
She added: “That whole site has been an eyesore for a long time.”

Ward member Coun David Ashby moved planning officers’ recommendation to grant approval, adding: “Anything that’s built on there is better than what is currently there.
“It may bring the area upmarket a touch.”
