Free-scoring Tydd St Mary got back to winning ways on Saturday with a convincing 9-0 win away over Kings Cliffe United in ChromaSport PDFL Division One.
With a point to prove after last week’s Spalding Inter Services Trophy semi-final exit at the hands of local rivals Long Sutton, the Saints started strongly and were 1 -0 up after just five minutes.
Joe Reed squared from the left for Jake Clitheroe to fire home into the bottom right hand corner.
Reed was involved again just a few minutes later when his cross was flicked on by Stuart Brown which found Maxwell Burrell, who slammed home for 2-0 after 18 minutes.
Burrell then turned provider two minutes later with a great through ball for Clitheroe to skip past the keeper and tap into an empty net.
Tydd were flying now and had the bit between their teeth, and when Alan Burch put in a great cross, there was Reed on hand to slot home for 4-0 with less than half an hour played.
Dave Cooper, in goal for the Saints, sent a long ball up front that was flicked on for Karl Smith to poke the ball forward to Reed who did the rest to make it 5-0 on 38 minutes.
Jason Bradshaw entered the game after Smith went off injured and he had an immediate effect, teeing up Clitheroe who dropped his shoulder and struck a fierce shot from 30 yards that flew in off the post, giving the Kings Cliffe keeper no chance for his hat-trick.
The Saints entered the second half hungry for more goals and the seventh came just 30 seconds after the re-start. Will Kirkham sent a delightful ball over the top of the Kings Cliffe defence that
Clitheroe latched onto and despatched into the corner of the net for his fourth of the match and 45th of the season.
After a flurry of subs from both sides, Tydd scored their eighth goal on the hour when Burrell flew down the left and put in a great low cross that zipped the surface for Brown to divert into the net. 8-0.
Ed Pentney replaced Clitheroe 20 minutes from time and scored with his first touch from a Tim Lowe assist to make it 9-0 and complete the scoring for the rampant Saints.
Co-manager Dan Monaghan said: “This was a pleasing response to last week’s disappointment and I couldn’t be prouder of the lads out there. They stuck to the task and were ruthless.”
