Andy Prior is on the verge of claiming victory in this year’s Welland Yacht Club Sunday points series.
Prior further cemented his grip on proceedings in races three and four of the series this weekend.
And, with just two rounds remaining this weekend, Prior’s three wins so far look to be enough to take overall success.
Sunday’s event saw 11 boats taking part on a day which was lacking in wind.
Race three had a rare down wind start which saw Lucy Burton in the lead ahead of Prior as they rounded the first mark.
With the remainder of the fleet all bunched up behind, Prior started to pull ahead of Burton as Phil Robinson moved clear of Tom Bell.
The remainder of the fleet switched places among themselves as a few found the odd bit of breeze.
Result for race three: 1 Andy Prior, 2 Phil Robinson, 3 Lucy Burton, 4 Tom Bell.
With the promise of slightly more wind, race four was optimistically made a little longer.
Bell made the most of the start and, with Prior closely behind, they both managed to pull away.
Robinson was in third but, with the wind dying away, it made for a leisurely return leg.
At this point the river made a perfect vantage point to watch the Lancaster Bomber make its approach run over the Fens for the Ayscoughfee 40s weekend flypast.
Race four results: 1 Tom Bell, 2 Andy Prior, 3 Phil Robinson, 4 Paul Wilson.
Junior Katie Follington took part in her first races this week, competing solo in a topper and managing an eighth and sixth place finish. Her younger brother Jack was crewing for mum Gail.
Junior sailing sessions resume on Sunday, August 28, from 9.30-11am.
