Prior keeps his fine form going with winning treble at Welland Yacht Club

Andy Prior’s red-hot form at Welland Yacht Club continued with a clean sweep of victories at the weekend.

Sunday saw the start of two new race series for the club, with the first of the day being race one of the Sunday Points.

Despite the drizzle, seven boats took to the start with Andy Agar (Laser) taking the early lead from Tom Bell (Laser), Prior (Laser), Paul

Burton (Solo), Gail Follington (Laser Radial), Mark Holland (Laser) and Katie Follington (RS Feva).

Disaster then struck Agar when his rudder became detached, dropping him down the fleet whilst he tried to reattach it.

That left Prior in the lead followed by Bell, with the duo pulling away from the rest of the fleet. Holland managed to move into third, followed by Gail Follington and then Agar, with Katie Follington in the smallest boat in the fleet at the rear.

As they gibed around the windward mark for the run back down to the clubhouse it was still Prior from Bell and Burton had closed the gap to Holland.

Once around the clubhouse mark to start a second lap Burton would take third during the tack back up the course and Agar would move into fifth.

As expected, Prior was first across the line followed by Bell in second and Burton third, with the top three positions unchanged under handicap.

The afternoon saw races one and two of the Afternoon Points series, which was contested under personal handicap by the same seven boats.

This time Prior took the lead from the start, followed by Agar then Bell, Burton, Holland and the Follingtons.

As Prior and Bell led upwind, Holland moved up to third from Burton in fourth, Agar in fifth and the Follingtons sixth and seventh.

Prior maintained the lead to the end from Bell in second, and Holland in third.

The top two positions remained unchanged, but Katie Follington jumped up to third with Burton fourth under personal handicap.

The fleet was down to six for the second round, with Prior again taking the early lead from Holland then Bell, Agar and the Follingtons.

Soon Bell would be in second with Holland third and Agar closing.

However, Prior was again first across the line from Bell with Agar finally passing Holland on rounding the final mark. Once personal handicaps were applied Prior saw his third win of the day confirmed, with Bell second and Holland third.
