Prior back on winning form in Welland Yacht Club’s Frostbite Series

Andy Prior claimed his second victory of Welland Yacht Club’s Frostbite Series on Sunday as he bossed round four.

Some eight boats took to the start line for the latest round, with a reasonable breeze and a slightly longer course than usual being set.

It was Prior who took the lead from the off in his Laser, followed by Gail Follington (Topper), Paul Burton (Solo), Ros Nickols (Europe), Ian Thompson and crew (Enterprise), Paul Wilson (Solo), Katie Follington (Topper) and Alistair Mitchell (Laser).

As the race progressed, Burton and Nickols would move into second and third places respectively behind pace-setter Prior.

Behind them, a lapse of concentration while giving way to another boat saw Wilson find himself in the water after a capsize and forced him to retire from the race.

Meanwhile, as the fleet began its second lap, the slower Toppers opted to take a single lap time.

With positions on the water remaining unchanged, the Solo of Burton and Europe of Nickols had identical handicaps – so were trying to keep within handicap distance of the lead Laser of Prior. However, there was no denying that Prior was the winner on the day and he secured his second win of the campaign after handicaps were applied.

Burton was second, with Nickols grabbing third ahead of Katie Follington.

The Frostbite Series runs every Sunday until reaching a conclusion on Boxing Day.
