Prior at the double to take overall glory win Welland Yacht Club’s Richard Thaker Trophy

Andy Prior raced to a double victory at Welland Yacht Club on Sunday to claim the Richard Thacker Trophy.

Usually an open regatta where neighbouring clubs can come and take part, it was only for Welland members this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Run as a pursuit race with five participants in varying class of boat taking part, the first away in a Laser Radial was Alan Cox, closely followed by the Europe of Ros Nickols, then the two Lasers of Tom Bell and Prior.

Finally, the Supernova of Paul Burton was off to chase those ahead of him down.

With a reasonably strong breeze, swift progress was made to the top of the course.

With the first lap complete, Prior had opened up a small lead over Bell and was closing in on Nickols, while Burton was also making up ground at the back.

On rounding the next top mark, Prior would take second place from Nickols on the way back to the clubhouse.

But, as the time ticked down, Nickols would retire from the race with about 15 minutes to go.

Prior finally took the lead and with five minutes to go, but Bell, Cox and Burton were neck and neck.

When time was called, Prior took the win from Bell in second, Burton in third and Cox in fourth.

After a short break the final race got underway again, with the same starting order other than the missing Nickols.

After rounding the top mark, Cox encountered an issue with his rudder – forcing him to take to the bank to correct and losing him precious time.

That allowed Prior and Bell to close right in and Burton also gaining considerably on him.

On the way back to the clubhouse Prior and Bell would both get past and, during the second run up to the top mark, Burton breezed past too.

Prior then got caught by a gust, causing him to take a swim and allowing Bell to get past.

However, Prior was able to get right of way around the top mark and soon regained the lead.

The final result saw Prior take the win from Bell in second, with Burton third and Cox again fourth.

With the results of both races being the same, this would also be the overall result.
