Pre-season: Ten-man Spalding United see off Wakes to reach trophy final

Spalding United booked their place in the final of the Lincolnshire Free Press Trophy with a 2-0 win over UCL Division One side Bourne Town on a wet and windy Tuesday night.

Spalding started four triallists – and two of them combined to open the scoring on 15 minutes, while another was sent off shortly afterwards. That didn’t deny Thorogood’s side, though, and sub Tobias Liversedge settled the clash with a second five minutes from time.

If Pinchbeck United win tonight’s (Wednesday, 7.45pm, Sir Halley) second semi, the duo will clash in the final at the Sir Halley on Saturday (3pm).

But, if Holbeach United get the better of the Knights, they will host the Tulips in a Carter’s Park final on Saturday (also 3pm). The losers will play Bourne at home (Sat, 3pm).

Spalding boss Lewis Thorogood is hoping the Tulips win the trophy to instil a “winning mentality” ahead of the new season.
