Porpoises spotted in River Welland near Spalding

What are believed to be three harbour porpoises have been spotted in the River Welland this afternoon (Tuesday, March 19).

Madi Corby and her partner Sam Wibberley were walking their four dogs along its banks close to the bridge that carries over the A16 when they saw the animals at around 3pm.

Madi believes the animals were dolphins due to the animals’ nose and fins, however a spokesman for the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust said that the animals are harbour porpoises.

She thinks the animals swam up stream but had to turn around at the flood gate.

“We noticed something move in the water and another dog walker filming so walked over to see them.” said Madi who runs the Pawfect Walkie dog walking business. “There were three in the water under the bridge for about 10 minutes playing around in the water.

“We then watched them swim back out towards the sea.”
