Police warn residents after ‘lots of reports’ of scammers targeting elderly residents over heating

Lincolnshire Police have urged people to be aware of scams that have taken place in the county with several reports in Holbeach.

A meeting of Holbeach Parish Council was read a police statement which said there were “lots of reports of cold callers targeting older residents” in the town.

The statement said: “They’re asking for extortionate fees for insulating lofts, making out that what the family has is a health hazard and asking for thousands of pounds up front.

“Similar tactics are being used by cold callers saying the residents qualify for a free boiler.

“A small proportion will be eligible through various schemes if they’re in receipt of benefits and meet other criteria. The scammers use that information to get the trust of the victim and ask for a deposit for the boiler.

“The scammers take the deposit and the victim does not get a boiler.

“Don’t buy from door knockers and don’t commit to anything over the phone from cold callers.”
