A dozen members of a Spalding running group were left standing on Sunday when a suspected security threat forced a planned run to be cancelled.
Halmer Harriers members had travelled to Peterborough to take part in the Perkins Great Eastern Run on Sunday but police decided it needed to be cancelled for security reasons.
Harrier Ade Mills said: “We were told about 15 minutes before the start at 10.30am that there would be a ten minute delay.
“At about 10.45am we were informed there had been an incident on the course which was going to cause a delay they were unable to say how long.”
The thousands of runners who’d assembled were then finally told at 11.10am that the race wouldn’t be going ahead.
“We were all cold, very wet and disappointed but agreed that the organisers were given very little choice because of the circumstances,” Mr Mills added.
“The conditions down at the start and finishing area were extremely wet and muddy so we all went home.”
A statement from Cambridgeshire Police said they were called to reports of a man acting suspiciously along the route and “as a result a major firearms response was launched.”
They added: “Following a comprehensive investigation it is believed that the witness was acting in good faith but has misinterpreted what was seen.”
