Police are tackling an expected World Cup spike in domestic abuse head-on with a hard-hitting campaign.
Specially printed beermats will be handed out to pubs and clubs around South Holland and adverts will be aired on local radio highlighting the message that domestic violence will not be tolerated.
The campaign, which will also include a Twitter drive to encourage people to report incidents, starts today to coincide with the opening game of the FIFA World Cup in Brazil.
It is feared that while most people will be enjoying the tournament, it could spell a period of fear and violence for some.
Spalding’s Community Police Inspector Jim Tyner said: ““We are absolutely committed to reducing incidents of violence that goes on behind closed doors and, together with our partners, have a number of initiatives running to support the campaign.
“These include radio adverts on Lincs FM, timed to coincide with match days, social media campaigns, and prominent poster displays. Trading Standards and the force Licencing Department will also be delivering specially printed beermats to local pubs and bars.
“On Twitter, we are using the hashtag #BlowTheWhistle to actively encourage reporting of incidents so we can do all we can to address this despicable crime”.
Nationally, police have recognised the impact of major sports events on reported levels of domestic abuse.
Analytical and academic work has shown that there is a propensity for an increase in domestic abuse during international football tournaments, usually heightened during match days.
Previous figures suggest an increase in reported domestic abuse offences of up to 27 per cent on match days and alcohol is a known contributory factor.
Lincolnshire Police has said it is “committed to supporting victims and pursuing offenders”.
