Police admit incorrect reply over South Holland District Council lorry crash

Lincolnshire Police have revealed the cause of a crash which caused more than £20,000 of damage to a South Holland District Council refuse lorry.

It follows a Freedom of Information request by The Voice which police now admit was answered incorrectly.
The refuse lorry incident happened in Nene Terrace, Crowland, in September last year. Three crew members were hurt. One suffered serious injuries and was flown to hospital.
The council declined to say what caused the lorry to ditch and in March police refused to release any details under an FOI request.

The Voice appealed that decision and last week the police disclosed details, confirming that no witness statements were taken as part of the investigation.

A statement said: “The reason for the collision would appear to be that the rear wheel of the vehicle has come off the road surface onto the grass verge which was soft and the weight of the vehicle, which was more than half loaded, has pulled the vehicle into the ditch.
“There is no suggestion the vehicle was being driving at excess speed or inappropriately for the road conditions.”

The force was unable to confirm when the collision investigation was completed or how long officers spent on the case.
