Points mean prizes for Welland Yacht Club ace Tom after double victory

Tom Bell stormed to overall glory in Welland Yacht Club’s Afternoon Points Series after winning the final two rounds on Sunday.

An exciting afternoon was in store, with four of the competitors being able to take overall glory.

The first of the two races saw Ros Nickols managing to pull ahead early on, with Paul Burton and Bell just behind. As they headed up river to the top mark the faster boats of Burton and Bell went ahead – but they faced an anxious wait with handicaps to be applied.

Meanwhile Neal Tack, who was without crew in his graduate, single-handedly managed to capsize during a tack.

Race one results: 1st Tom Bell; 2nd Ros Nickols; 3rd Paul Burton; 4th Paul Wilson.

The final race got under way with Burton taking the early lead from Bell, with Nickols closely behind.

The order remained throughout the race, but with this also being the order of fastest to slowest boat it was down to handicaps to finalise the results again.

Race two results: 1st Tom Bell; 2nd Paul Burton; 3rd Ros Nickols; 4th Neal Tack.

Overall series results: 1st Tom Bell; 2nd Ros Nickols; 3rd Paul Burton.

  • New Personal Handicap Series results (round one was held on Sunday morning): 1st Paul Burton; 2nd Harry Whitelam; 3rd Tom Bell; 4th Neal Tack.
