Plans for a new start to village centre

A major fundraising event to help re-boot a village youth centre will be held next month.

An action group was formed after the Gosberton building was under threat of being sold, and members have been working hard to get the centre open once again.
Around 70 villagers attended a public meeting in February to discuss the issue after trustees suggested selling the building for housing.
Trustees said there had been no income since the closure of a playgroup.
The original trustees had proposed selling the building to be converted into homes, but the action group has worked together to keep it as a community asset.
Funds are needed to help equip and run the centre, which is going through a number of inspections to ensure it meets current standards.
“We are going to be all ready for the big opening on May 20 – it’s been a lot of hard work,” said Tom Mehew, who previously ran the club with his wife Anne for several years.
A big-screen race night is being held along with a fish and chip summer from 6.45pm on Saturday, May 20.
The cost is £10 including supper and tickets have to be pre-booked on 07747 314390. On Sunday, May 21 there will be a spirit and wellbeing fayre from 10am to 3pm with free entry.
“A lot of us remember using the centre ourselves, and there are members who will lead a new youth club,” said Tom.
“We have got to get everything from scratch – we didn’t have any tables, but have been donated some and sponsored for some.
“There has been a lot of hard work going on behind the scenes, but some of those involved have got children of the right age to use the centre,” he added.
