Pinchbeck beat the odds to take tournament

The Lincolnshire Opener took place at Pinchbeck Croquet Club with six teams playing in the Golf Croquet doubles tournament.

Pinchbeck pairing, Ken Knock and Tim Barzycki were overall winners in a hard fought competition, with three of their five games going to 7-6.
The outcome rested on the final game between Gainsborough and Torksey, which had Torksey won, they would have won the overall competition but Gainsborough managed a 7-6 win to see Pinchbeck victors, having only lost one game.
Results: Gainsborough 6 Pinchbeck 7, Pinchbeck 7 Boston 3, Dunston 2 Pinchbeck 7, Pinchbeck 6 Torksey 7, Branston 6 Pinchbeck 7.
Meanwhile in Association Croquet, Pinchbeck won the Anderson Shield beating Wrest Park at Newport, Essex.
Mike Bowser, Knock and Adrian Kirby represented Pinchbeck.
The first game to finish was between Tim Brewer and Bowser in which Brewer was winner scoring +18.
Meanwhile the doubles game between George Collin and Tim Nurse against Kirby and Knock proved a much closer affair.
Due to a mis-swing of the mallet in which Kirby suffered a minor leg injury, Wrest Park came winners with a score of +1 giving them a 2-0 lead.
What looked an impossible task for Pinchbeck, who had to lose only one game to lose the match, suddenly took a turn as Bowser beat Nurse +17 and Knock playing Brewer swept the board +26.
This left Collin battling Kirby to determine the winner.
This proved a hit and miss affair in which ended up +10 to Kirby.
Against all the odds Pinchbeck were the overall winner 3-2.
In the meantime the first GC league match of the season has also taken place.
After a rain-delayed start Pinchbeck 1, featuring John and Ann Gillett and Derek Brocklesby, played Pinchbeck 2 featuring Sally Farrow, Sam Hales and Tim Barzycki with Pinchbeck 1 coming out winners.
Brocklesby and Gillett beat Barzycki and Farrow 7-2 in a doubles match while Ann Gillett beat Hales 7-6 in singles.
Singles results: John Gillett 6 Barzycki 7; Brocklesby 7 Farrow 6; Ann Gillett 5 Farrow 7; John Gillett 7 Hales 5; John Gillett 7 Farrow 5 Brocklesby 3 Barzycki 7; Brockelsby 7 Hales 4; Ann Gillett 4 Barzycki 7.
This left Pinchbeck 1 winning six games to Pinchbeck 2’s 4 with 61 hoops for and 56 against.
The next league game is on June 3 when Pinchbeck 1 play Unity (Sudbury) and a number of players are taking part in a qualifier for the All England GC Handicap championship.
