Penalty heartbreak for Crowland

There was end of season heartbreak for Crowland Town as they lost the Peterborough and District Football League Senior Cup final on penalties last week.

Warboys Town took the honours after a 0-0 draw by winning the shoot-out 8-7 at Stamford AFC’s Zeeco Stadium on Friday, May 9.

The Bees were left to rue missed chances as the side that finished a point and place below them in the league lifted the trophy.

They spurned several chances in the first half, not least when a defensive mistake saw the ball ricochet off Harry Tidswell and slowly on to the post before an attempted tap in from inches out was blocked on the line by a brilliant last ditch tackle.

The near misses kept coming in the second half but Chris Winstanley was named the man of the match.

The penalty shoot-out also had its near misses for Crowland with one Warboys’ spot kick being tipped on to the post only for it to sneak into the side netting the other side.

But Warboys, who lost last year’s final of the cup on penalties, held their nerve to claim the cup.

It was a disappointing end to what has been a good season for Crowland in which they also finished runners up in the PDFL Premier League.

After only winning one of their first four games they went from late August to mid-March winning every game in the league.
