Peel’s win is no fisherman’s tale

It was not just round 12 of the Spalding Cycling Club Time Trial League last Tuesday but also the Fisherman’s Arms Handicap trophy.

This award is for the rider who beats their best time of the season on the Pode Hole course by the most. It was Chris Peel who triumphed, with a time of 29mins 8secs, a staggering 4:28 faster than he had gone on the course this season.

A solid ride from Chris Cooper was enough for him to take second place (24:26), knocking of 1:01 off his previous best. Rounding off the podium was his fiancée Abigale Young (27:08), who slashed 31 seconds off her previous best.

League results looked more familiar at the top, with Dom Brand (21:55) fending off Matt Chappell by 13 seconds (22:12). Daniel Warner continued his strong form for third place in 23:16. Fastest road bike was Cooper (24:26), who is starting to make the category his own, much like Evgeniya Brand in the women’s category, again storming to victory with a time of 25:34.

Tuesday saw the one-off special drop-bar challenge, where riders can only use road bikes.
