Pedestrianisation signs working

Highways bosses say new ‘no parking’ signs in a town centre are working well after the original ones were updated to try to make the rules clearer

Lincolnshire County Council (LCC) has replaced previously incorrect signs in Spalding’s Broad Street – at a cost of £513 – after town representatives had pointed out that the signs were incorrect and some people were being wrongly fined, writes Local Democracy Reporter Oliver Castle.

The signs – at the entrance to the town centre – originally said ‘no parking at any time’ – when they should have said ‘no parking between 10am and 4pm’. These signs have now been corrected by the county council.

The signs also include ‘no loading’ or ‘unloading’ and ‘no blue badge holder parking’ restrictions during this time period.

A spokesperson for LCC said: “Outside of the 10am-4pm time period, and on a Sunday, the area is open for use as there are no parking restrictions in place.

“We are patrolling and enforcing the area. 15 Penalty Charge Notices were issued in April, for example

“The current signs were installed in January and cost £513.”

The signs are part of a push to properly enforce the pedestrianisation of Spalding town centre – with a public consultation showing residents want the rules to be enforced and to stop the issue of cars passing through the town in the middle of the day.

Coun Rob Gibson who sits on the county council and South Holland District Council, previously said the county council had made a ‘mistake’ and had put up the wrong parking signs.

At a Spalding Town Forum meeting in September last year, the Spalding councillor – who is deputy leader of the county council – said that people who had been incorrectly fined would now have their fines cancelled.
