Parking charges return to town

Parking charges are returning to three Spalding car parks as a summer initiative comes to an end.

In a bid to encourage shoppers to return to the high street, South Holland District Council axed charges for three months at three short-stay car parks.

But normal service will resume on Friday (October 1) when charges will be reintroduced at Vine Street, Herring Lane and Sheep Market.

“It has been great to see the positive response to this initiative of free short-stay parking over the past three months and more people taking the opportunity to explore the variety of local and independent businesses and traders in

Spalding and enjoy the excellent hospitality of our pubs, cafes and restaurants,” said Coun Rodney Grocock, portfolio holder for Spalding town improvement.

“We hope that now the people have returned they will appreciate what our town has to offer and come back.

“These three months were just one of numerous initiatives to help support our town centres and encourage people to use the great local businesses and traders we have, with more events and plans due to be announced in the coming weeks.”

Next weekend will see the return of the Pumpkin Festival on Saturday, October 9, but with no parade this year because of the pandemic.

There will be a pumpkin sculpture trail and a range of craft activities, food and gift stalls from 10am to 3pm.
Live performers will also be entertaining and there will be a Scarecrow Competition along with an online Pumpkin Pets Competition, sponsored by Rookes.
