Owner says play park won’t reopen

Adventureland is not going to re-open at all with the loss of 18 jobs due to rising costs across the sector.

The centre, based at Springfields, was officially opened in 2018 by Coronation Street star Samia Lonchambon, amid a blaze of publicity.

With a junior drivers’ JCB zone, railway rides, man-made beach and rock pool, it was designed to provide a family-friendly zone at the shopping centre.

It was hoped to boost visitor numbers but economic pressures right across the hospitality and entertainment industry means it is no longer viable.

Owned by Planning Solutions Ltd, Adventureland was due to re-open later this month after a seasonal shut down during the winter.

But company Chief Executive Kevin Smith said the decision had been taken to tell the staff that they wouldn’t be needed again this season.

“We are terminating the lease on the site because of the challenges to operating at the moment,” he said.

Mr Smith said the company’s other entertainments sites remained in business but Spalding was the only place to have an Adventureland.

“It’s becoming very hard with rising utilities, wages and overheads. We hope the landlords can re-let the area,” he added.

Families who had membership to the centre are being contacted directly and any refunds will be given by Planning Solutions Ltd.

A spokesman for Springfields, said: “The current operator of Adventure Land has advised that they will not be reopening the attraction.

“We are in the process of sourcing a new operator and will provide further updates as soon as we are able. Thank you for your patience and understanding.”
