Overnight closures for roundabout projects

Drivers around Spalding might be pleased to know that at least one set of major roadworks is coming to a conclusion.

Work is being carried out on two roundabouts along the A16 and there have been delays as a result.
Currently, night time closures of one of the roundabouts is resulting in a detour of up to 50 miles for HGV drivers, as they can only be sent of a similar road.
During the course of this month, the resurfacing and road markings will be complete on the Springfields roundabout.
Workmen will also install a safety barrier in the middle of the roundabout . Topsoil, seeding and installation of fencing will also be carried out.
“We are ready to start laying final road surfacing at the improved roundabout and its junctions.
“But, to safely carry out this work, we need to close off the sections of the roundabout where we will be working,” said Coun Richard Davies, executive member for highways.
“Unfortunately, the diversion routes for these night closures are quite long, between 20 and 50 miles,” he added.
The road was closed on Monday evening.
“We’ve looked into alternative ways of working but, we’ll be laying final surfacing around the roundabout and all of its tie-ins to the A16 and A151, as well as completing splitter islands and installing signage on the traffic islands.
“Because we need to ensure safe working space for our contractor, night-time road closures are the only way to carry this work out,” added Mr Davies.
The footprint of the island in the roundabout and drainage work will also be completed.
Meanwhile at the Pinchbeck roundabout, work continues on the upgrading project.
During September it was re-opened to traffic, having been closed over the summer. Street lighting columns were installed along with the creation of a new island.
Throughout October the work schedule includes drainage of the new island and traffic ducting will be fitted.
The lanes approaching the roundabout continue to be narrowed for work.

The project is being funded by a portion of the £20m in funding from central government in October 2021.
