Over 150 youngsters take part in hockey tournament

Spalding Hockey Club hosted the Primary Schools Hockey Tournament Three, the third of five tournaments planned for this school year, at Glen Park, Surfleet.

Nineteen teams from 13 local primary schools participated in the tournament giving over 150 youngsters the chance to represent their schools and play competitive hockey.
The games were once again excellently controlled by teenage umpires from Spalding Hockey Club.
The 19 teams were divided into four graded leagues.
Four teams competed in the advanced league A, the most experienced, with five teams in each of the intermediate, and beginner A and B leagues.
In the advanced league, the two top teams from tournament two, Monks House and Tower Road A, battled out the opening game which ended in a stalemate.
The Boston-based team then went on to win their other two matches beating Ayscoughfee A (2-0) and John Harrox A (3-0) to top the table.
Monks House went down in a rare defeat to John Harrox A (3-0) before bouncing back to beat Ayscoughfee A (2-0) in their closing game to finish in second position.
Tower Road showed their strength in depth as the B team took the honours with a clean sweep in the intermediate league. Four straight wins over St John’s (1-0), St Thomas’s (3-0), Gosberton Academy A (3-0) and St Norbert’s (4-0) saw them win the league in style.
Newly promoted Gosberton Academy A showed that they have the potential to do well at this level finishing in the runner up slot with wins over St Norbert’s (2-1) and St Thomas’s (2-1) whilst being held to a goalless draw by St John’s.
Peterborough-based Eye Primary impressed in the beginner A league with wins over Tower Road C (3-0), Surfleet Primary (3-0) and Gosberton Risegate (1-0) and were only denied a clean sweep being held to a goalless draw by a determined Pinchbeck East team.
Gosberton Risegate once again showed great fight throughout and with 1-0 wins over Surfleet Primary and Tower Road C and a goalless draw with Pinchbeck East claimed the second place spot.
Spalding Parish were much too strong for the other teams in the beginner B league and won all four of their games beating Tower Road D (2-0), John Harrox B (7-0), Gosberton Academy B (5-0) and Ayscoughfee B (1-0) to earn promotion to the higher leagues for tournament four.
Tower Road D made it a good day for the school ending in second place.
Two tournaments remain with tournament four scheduled for Friday, March 15 and the finals on Friday, May 3.
