Open garden raises cash

The winners of the 2018 Holbeach in Bloom Best Garden Award opened their acclaimed green space to the public last weekend and raised hundreds of pounds for a the couple’s local church charity.

Eileen Gilliatt and her husband Colin, who previously won a Spalding in Bloom award at their old address, put on the event to raise money for their local parish church, St Mary Magdalene in Fleet.

Eileen said: “The main part of the garden, an acre, consists of shrubs, trees and perennials, a large pond and an orchard.

“Colin has developed the garden from nothing over the past 13 years.

“His dream was always to have an acre of garden.”

The day’s heavy rainfall didn’t stop visitors, and the day went ahead successfully.

“Although there were some heavy showers, 50 people came along and we raised £240,” Eileen said.
