On your marks, get set, bake!

There will hopefully be no soggy bottoms on show as the current winner of The Great British Bake Off comes to Spalding for a special charity cake competition.

As part of South Holland District Council chair Andrew Woolf’s fundraising for Mencap and Blood Cancer UK, he’s organised his own Bake Off as part of the authority’s Step Into Spring event on Saturday, March 30.
And he’s roped in current Great British Bake Off winner 2023 Matty Edgell, who lives in Peterborough, to help judge.
Any bakes can be entered into the competition but Easter themed treats are recommended to really impress the judges.
There is not an age limit and all abilities are welcome too, so whether you’re just starting out or have been baking for decades you can get involved.
Entrants will be able to arrive at the South Holland Centre from 10am to set up and display their yummy creations. There is no parking outside so please make sure you – or someone you know – is able to carry your bake to the centre.
Special judge Matty will begin looking at and tasting the entries along with Coun Woolf at 11am before the winners are announced and presented with their prizes on the stage in the town centre.
Visitors will also be invited to the South Holland Centre where they will be able to buy slices or whole cakes in return for a donation which will be going to the Chairman’s Charities – Blood Cancer UK and Mencap.
Coun Woolf said: “This is such an exciting event and I’m really pleased to be part of the judging panel.
“We’re hoping to see if we can find our very own Star Baker here in South Holland so I’d like to encourage our local residents to get on board and support this event.
“As if that wasn’t good enough, visitors will be able to buy some slices – or an entire cake – after the judging has finished so there is more than one way to donate on the day.
“It promises to be a really fun – and hopefully delicious – competition.”
