Ollie’s fine run tops list of strong showings from Nene Valley Harriers at Stamford 5k

There were two new names on the role of honour after Wednesday’s Stamford 5k – the third race of the 2016 Peterborough Grand Prix Series.

Stuart Haw, of Peterborough AC, was fastest over the hilly and twisty course, racing to his maiden road race victory in a speedy time of 15.49mins.

Although 22-year-old Haw controlled the race, he had to be at his best to hold off the challenge of 17-year-old Nene Valley Harriers youngster Ollie Bowling, who finished as runner-up in only his second senior road race with a time of 16.04mins.

John Pike, the Newham and Essex Beagles veteran was third, 11 seconds behind Bowling.

Meanwhile, Nene Valley stalwart Nicky Morgan gained her first road race victory in the seven years she has been with the club.

The 46-year-old speedster is enjoying a sparkling summer, being resurgent on the road and track.

Morgan is currently ranked in the British Veterans 45 top 10 for the 1,500m, 3,000m and 5,000m, in which she is ranked third.

Although Morgan’s time of 20.00mins was down on her best, she knew that she was holding a comfortable advantage over her pursuers.

Nene Valley teenager Ellie Piccaver was runner-up with a fine time of 20.25mins as she continues to improve with every race.

Piccaver’s 16-year-old team mate Josie Fortune finished third in 20.33mins, capping a fine day for the club’s ladies.

The Junior 3k curtain-raiser was dominated by Nene Valley athletes, with Benjamin Roberts winning in 10.24mins, closely followed by Ethan Ellison, Samuel Oakley and Matthew Dowling in second, third and fourth places.

Bourne Town Harrier Molly Peel crossed the line as first girl, recording a time of 11.00mins.

Ella Robinson, of Nene Valley, was second ahead of her team-mate Katie Tasker.

  • The Eye Charity 5 took place on Thursday at Lindisfarne Road, with Yaxley’s James Mogridge winning in a time of 27.16mins.

Danny Snipe, of Peterborough AC, finished as runner-up some 40 seconds further back.

Stamford Strider Simon Fell finished third.

Veteran Geraldine Larham (March AC) was the first lady with a time of 33.57mins and was followed home by Nene Valley’s Sophie Wilkinson-Hargate.

  • Nene Valley’s Philippa Taylor finished as second lady and 12th overall at the Whissendine 6 last Friday.

The England veteran international ran well with a time of 37.36mins, but was beaten by Huncote Harrier Nicky Nealon, also one of the country’s top veterans.
