No generation gap for artwork in Holbeach

There was no generation gap in sight when young and old joined forces for a creative session.

A group of children aged from seven to 11 were invited to Holbeach Hospital for the arts afternoon with older residents.

The event was organised by activities co-ordinators Jackie White and Maggie Ward.

“For some time now I have been interested in the concept of inter-generational activities within a care setting,” said Jackie.

“This is not a new concept and has been successfully implemented in both the US and Europe, where day care facilities are regularly shared both by children and the elderly.

“The positive effects for both age groups, including elevation of mood and increased physical activity, are well-documented.”

A trial was initiated by Jackie and Maggie during the Easter school holiday.

The five children joined some residents for artwork with an animal theme.

“There was some interesting interaction between the generations. One resident commented that she didn’t know anything about zombies or unicorns until today,” said Jackie.

The artwork was chosen on a theme for National Pet Month and everyone was able to choose their own materials to work with.

Several of the residents joined with the children and the event was deemed a great success.

Maggie and Jackie are hoping to hold similar events across the generations in the future.
