New president for hospital charity

A former councillor has stepped into a charity role previously held by the late Angela Newton.

Christine Lawton has been made the president of the Friends of Johnson Hospital.
Steve Weatherly-Barton, chairman and chaplain of the Friends of Johnson Community Hospital, said: “When we learned of the death of Coun Angela Newton, who had played such a significant role as chairman, and more recently as president of the Friends of Johnson Community Hospital, we seriously wondered if there was anyone capable of stepping into her shoes.
“To our great delight we have now been able to welcome Christine Lawton as our new president.
“Christine brings to this task a distinguished record of service as a councillor, together with a wealth of wisdom, experience and compassion which will enrich the vital work we do in support of our excellent hospital.
“We are honoured that she accepted our invitation to serve in this role.”
Christine said: “I was delighted to be invited by the Friends to become their president, replacing the much admired Coun Newton.
“The Johnson Community Hospital provides important medical services and care for residents of South Holland and beyond. I will do all I can to assist the Friends’ charity with their ambitious plans to ensure this vital facility is given support and funding for the benefit of both staff and patients.
“I hope to play my small part in their continuing efforts.
“I thank the charity’s members for all the work they do in providing those ‘extras’ which can make such a difference.”
